Biliary Cancer

Cholangiocarcinoma, also referred to as cancer of the bile ducts, predominantly affects individuals over the age of 50, but it isn’t restricted to this age group and can develop at any time. This is a broader term that encompasses cancers that arise in any part of the biliary system, including the bile ducts (cholangiocarcinoma), gallbladder, and sometimes the liver. The biliary system consists of the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts, which work together to produce, store, and transport bile, a fluid that helps digest fats. Symptoms can include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), itching, dark urine, pale stools, fever, weakness, and abdominal pain.

Types of Biliary Cancers We Treat:

Depending on the location of the cancer within the bile ducts, doctors classify cholangiocarcinoma into various categories:

  • Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma occurs within the liver.
  • Hilar cholangiocarcinoma is found at the bile duct confluence, where the liver and gallbladder connect.
  • Distal cholangiocarcinoma develops closer to the small intestine, away from the liver.

Treatment

Typically, treating biliary cancer involves a combination of surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
