Our History is Built on Philanthropy
From the beginning Phoebes charge “was to serve persons of the community regardless of race or ability to pay and build it out of brick or stone”.
In 1910 Judge Francis Flagg Putney donated $25,000 to the Ladies Hospital Aid Society of Albany to establish a hospital that:
- Named after his mother, ‘Phoebe’ Putney
- Serves all citizens of the community, regardless of race or ability to pay
- Is a brick building to withstand the greatest threat to structures at the time – fire
The little hospital on the plains of southwest Georgia opened its doors on August 1, 1911, beginning a tradition of healing and community service that would grow into one of America’s great not-for-profit community medical centers. In the decades since, the hospital’s service area has grown to a population of over 810,000, and Phoebe has grown into a more progressive community health system with more than 5,500 members of the ‘Phoebe Family“. Today, Phoebe continues to remain dedicated to Judge Putney’s original mission of service to all by bringing the most advanced medical talent and technology to the citizens of southwest Georgia.
The mission of the Phoebe Foundation, established in 1989, is to support the Phoebe Putney Health System by fundraising on its behalf. If you would like to support the health and wellness of southwest Georgia’s citizens, please call us today at 229-312-4483.
