Phoebe Sumter and Healthy Sumter Distributes Fresh Produce to Webster County Residents

sumterproduce aug2024Thursday, September 12, 2024 | Americus, Georgia – Phoebe Sumter & Flint River Fresh LLC joined forces once again to deliver food to the residents of Webster County.

150 fresh produce boxes were distributed to residents at the Webster County Extension Office. Each box contained a combination of cabbage, grapes, apples, onions, lettuce, sweet potatoes, shelled pecans & walnuts and raisins.

This event was part of Phoebe Sumter’s Healthy Sumter initiative to address Food Insecurity in Americus & Sumter County as well as neighboring counties. Other initiatives include eliminating Food Deserts by creating community gardens and teaching people how to create gardens at their own home. So far this year, more than 3,795 produce boxes have been distributed, over 38,000 pounds of produce, impacting more than 13,680 individuals.

Special thanks to Farmer Fredo of Flint River Fresh for delivering the items to Webster County. Also, a special kudos to volunteers who braved the rain and wet conditions to make sure the produce was distributed and delivered: Elaine Nealy, Terry Agerton, Arthur Britton, Lucy Moses, Clara Merrit and Ronnie Smith. Thanks for helping make this event a success despite the conditions.

The next Community Fresh Produce Giveaway is scheduled for Saturday, September 21st @ 11 am at the Emergency Operations Center (formerly the National Guard Armory) in Americus. This giveaway is in recognition of Phoebe Sumter winning the Most Beautiful Hospital Award for 2024 and is open to the public while supplies last.
