Cervical Cancer (DRAFT)

Cervical cancer arises from abnormal cell growth in the cervix, which is the lower section of the uterus connecting to the vagina. Not all precancerous cells will turn to cancer, but finding these problematic cells and treating them before they can change is critical to preventing cervical cancer.

Types of Cervical Cancers We Treat:

There are two main types of cancer of the cervix: squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas. About 80% to 90% of cervical cancers are squamous cell carcinomas, while 10% to 20% are adenocarcinomas.

A significant factor in many cervical cancer cases is various forms of the human papillomavirus, commonly known as HPV. Regular screening and vaccination against HPV can significantly lower the chances of contracting cervical cancer.

Treatment

Initial treatment for cervical cancer often involves surgery to remove the cancerous cells. Further treatments can include medications designed to eradicate cancer cells, such as chemotherapy and targeted therapy drugs. Another treatment approach is radiation therapy, which utilizes high-energy beams. In some cases, a combination of radiation and low-dose chemotherapy is recommended.
