Leukemia (DRAFT)

Leukemia is a term for blood cell cancers that begin when a cell’s DNA within bone marrow mutates and can’t develop and function normally. Leukemia cells often behave like abnormal white blood cells. It most often occurs in adults over 55, but it is also the most common cancer in children under 15.

Your dedicated care team at Phoebe Cancer Center is committed to guiding you through a treatment plan tailored to the unique circumstances of your leukemia diagnosis.

Types of Leukemia We Treat:

Leukemia originates in the bone marrow, the soft, sponge-like tissue inside your bones where blood cells are produced. If you have leukemia, one of the developing blood cells begins to multiply out of control. These abnormal cells start occupying the space within your bone marrow, crowding the cells that aim to mature into healthy red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

The major types of leukemia are:

  • Acute lymphocytic leukemia: This is the most common type of leukemia in young children but can also occur in adults.
  • Acute myelogenous leukemia: This common type of leukemia occurs in children and adults but is the most common type of acute leukemia in adults.
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia: The most common chronic adult leukemia may go unnoticed for years without needing treatment.
  • Chronic myelogenous leukemia: Mainly affecting adults, one may have few or no symptoms for months or years before the leukemia cells begin multiplying.
  • Other rarer types of leukemia include hairy cell leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes and myeloproliferative disorders

Treatment

Treatments for leukemia depend on the type of leukemia you have, your age and overall health, and if the leukemia has spread to other organs or tissues.
