City of Albany Detour Around Phoebe’s Main Campus To Begin Monday Morning

Albany, GA | August 25, 2023 – LATEST TRAFFIC DETOUR UPDATE…

With detours to accommodate a City of Albany sewer project set to begin Monday morning, Phoebe is warning patients and visitors to stay up to date on traffic changes to ensure they know the best route to facilities on the health system’s main campus in Albany. The city plans to begin detouring traffic away from a seven-block section of Jefferson Street at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, August 28. Crews will begin bringing in equipment, anticipating that work on the combined sewer separation project will begin soon.

The city plans to direct southbound traffic off Jefferson Street at 7th Avenue and northbound traffic off Jefferson Street at Society Avenue. Streets that cross Jefferson Street in that area will remain open, except when work is actively taking place in or around those intersections.

The city detour will direct traffic that would normally access the hospital from Jefferson Street to 4th Avenue via Jackson Street or Washington Street. Anyone going to the Phoebe Emergency Center or Labor & Deliver Department should cross Jefferson Street at 4th Avenue to enter the campus. Anyone needing to go to the main hospital entrance or medical towers will be able to turn left from 4th Avenue and enter the main hospital parking lot from Jefferson Street.

Access to the main parking lot will also be available from 2nd Avenue. The intersection of 2nd Avenue and Jefferson Street will not close Monday, but it will likely be blocked within a couple of weeks as work begins in that intersection.

“We simply don’t know how quickly work on the project will progress. Traffic routes to our campus may change several times throughout the project. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through these challenges together,” said Deb Angerami, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital Chief Executive Officer.

City leaders have promised to schedule weekly meetings with Phoebe, first responders, contractors and other project stakeholders. Phoebe will communicate any updates through local media, as well as its social media channels and website updates here.
