City of Americus Proclaims October Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Americus, GA | October 8, 2026 – October is officially Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Americus. Mayor Travis Rush, signed a proclamation recognizing the awareness month and highlighting the upcoming annual Sumter Pink Walk for Cancer. On Wednesday, October 7, Americus City Manager Raphel Maddox presented the proclamation, joined by representatives from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center and the Phoebe Sumter Foundation.
The annual proclamation serves as a reminder of the importance of breast cancer awareness and early detection. It also shows the strength of the community standing together in support of patients, survivors and their loved ones.
The proclamation kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness Month and comes just weeks before the annual Sumter Pink Walk for Cancer, which will be held Saturday, October 24 at 9 a.m. at the Mattie H. Marshall Cross Country Trail on the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center campus.
Over the past seven years, Sumter Pink has raised nearly $170,000 for local cancer patients. Proceeds from this year’s walk will benefit Phoebe Sumter’s Oncology Clinic and the patients it serves.
“We are so grateful to the City of Americus for standing with us in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” said Katherine Council, Director, Phoebe Sumter Foundation. “With so many families in our community being touched in some way by breast cancer, this proclamation is a meaningful reminder that no one faces their journey alone. We want to carry that spirit of support into the Sumter Pink Walk, too, as we come together to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones and support our patients at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.”
Community members are encouraged to wear pink all throughout October and participate in the Sumter Pink Walk on October 24.
Registration is $25 per person through October 9 and $35 beginning October 10 through the day of the event. Each participant will receive a Sumter Pink T-shirt and swag bag.
