Georgia Power Foundation Supports Phoebe Hospice Services in Memory of President Jimmy Carter
Americus, GA | July 9, 2025 – The Georgia Power Foundation has made generous donations to Phoebe Sumter Hospice and Phoebe Hospice in memory of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, honoring his legacy as a long-time advocate for clean energy and compassionate care.
Phoebe Sumter Hospice provided hospice services for both Pres. & Mrs. Carter. The gift was made in recognition of hospice’s role in providing care and comfort and highlights Georgia Power’s continued commitment to the communities it serves, especially in Southwest Georgia. Phoebe Sumter Hospice serves patients in Sumter and seven other surrounding counties. Phoebe Hospice serves patients in 11 counties in and around Albany. The Georgia Power Foundation donated $100,000 that was split evenly between Phoebe Sumter Hospice and Phoebe Hospice.
President Carter maintained a close relationship with Georgia Power’s parent company, Southern Company, dating back to his time as Governor of Georgia. He played an instrumental role in shaping the state’s energy future through the Georgia Territorial Electric Service Act of 1973 and remained a pioneer in energy innovation throughout his presidency, most notably creating the Department of Energy in 1977 and installing solar panels on the White House.
“The most transforming element in my life was when our family finally got electricity. Giving a family or human being this magic is a life transforming element, you might say freedom,” President Jimmy Carter said in ‘Big Bets’, a Southern Company documentary.
In 2017, he partnered with Georgia Power and SolAmerica Energy to develop a 10-acre solar farm on his property in Plains, to help power his hometown.
“Georgia Power is proud to serve the people of Georgia and especially grateful for the citizens of Southwest Georgia. President Carter’s passion for service and progress deeply inspired our company, and we are honored to recognize his legacy with this gift to Phoebe Sumter Hospice. We are committed to supporting the communities we serve and the patients and families who depend on compassionate care across this region,” said Don Porter, Area Manager, Georgia Power.
President Carter once described electricity as the “most transforming element” in his life, likening it to a kind of freedom. That same spirit of transformation lives on through the care provided at Phoebe Hospice facilities every day.
“This generous gift from the Georgia Power Foundation not only celebrates President Carter’s enduring legacy but also strengthens the support system for patients and families across Southwest Georgia who depend on Phoebe’s hospice services during life’s most difficult times,” said Parker Douglas, Phoebe Foundation Director.
She added that Phoebe is honored to be part of this meaningful tribute to a visionary leader and a cherished Georgia native and is grateful for the Georgia Power Foundation’s continued support of Phoebe’s mission.
