Meet Henry and Will: NICU Love Project Donates 203 Books to Phoebe NICU Families
Thirteen years ago, Michelle and Ronnie Wheeler welcomed their twin boys, Henry and Will, into the world at just 28 weeks gestation at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Henry weighed 2 pounds 4 ounces, and Will, due to intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and low blood flow, weighed only 1 pound 8 ounces. Henry spent six weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), while Will’s journey extended to 13 weeks, facing significant health challenges.
The early years were particularly challenging for Will, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and epilepsy and required tube feeding. Despite these obstacles, his joyful spirit shines through, he is known for giving the best hugs and bringing happiness to everyone he meets. Now in the 7th grade, after being held back a year tosupport his development, Will continues to inspire those around him with his resilience and cheerful demeanor.
Henry, on the other hand, has flourished academically and socially. Currently in the 8th grade, he is part of the gifted program and an active member of the robotics club. His intelligence and remarkable height make him stand out among his peers.
Grateful for the exceptional care their sons received, Michelle and her family founded the NICU Love Project as a way to give back to the Phoebe NICU community. This initiative, supported by family members and a dedicated Facebook community, collects donations annually to provide new board books to families in the NICU. These books offer parents a means to bond with their premature babies through reading during their hospital stay. Michelle delivered 203 board books to Phoebe’s NICU families, spreading love and hope to those currently navigating their own NICU journeys.
Reflecting on their experience, Michelle emphasizes the importance of support during such challenging times: “We know firsthand how difficult the NICU journey can be. These books give families a chance to bond with their babies, to sit and read during those long days and nights. It’s our way of spreading love, hope, and encouragement.”
The Wheeler family’s dedication to the NICU Love Project not only honors Henry and Will’s journey but also provides comfort and a sense of normalcy to other families facing similar challenges. Their story is a testament to resilience, gratitude, and the profound impact of community support.
