Phoebe Bariatric Program Reaches 500th Procedure Milestone
Americus, GA | March 29, 2021 – General and bariatric surgeons, Jeremy Joyner, MD, and Sean Sheff, MD, performed their 500th bariatric surgery at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus on Monday, March 22. Phoebe bariatric patients have received the benefits of collectively shedding nearly 15 tons of unhealthy, excess weight – with exceedingly good results.
“Our patients who elected to have sleeve gastrectomy procedures have enjoyed results that far exceed the national 3-year post-op weight loss average," shared Dr. Joyner. “We continue to see even greater results with gastric by-pass surgery.”
Surgical weight-loss options presently offered by Phoebe Bariatrics’ surgeons Joyner and Sheff include sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
“Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is recognized as a higher-risk, higher-reward procedure. Our patients are achieving an average weight loss of 70-100% of their excess body weight.” Dr. Sheff noted. “With gastric bypass, we have also seen tremendous results in comorbidity reduction of obesity-related diseases like type 2 diabetes, high-blood pressure, bad cholesterol and sleep apnea. All surgeries carry some risks. We view it as risk versus benefit. With both gastric sleeve and bypass procedures, pre-operative regimens are rigorous, and the patients are monitored closely.”
Eboni Mannie underwent the laprascopic gastric bypass surgery several years back and is still reaping the health benefits. “I encourage anyone who has continually battled weight loss without success to consider this procedure. In the first month after my surgery, my weight reduction completely eliminated my need for blood pressure medication. In total I was able to lose 135 pounds in one year,” stated Eboni.
In addition to board-certified and fellowship-trained bariatric surgeons, Sheff and Joyner, Phoebe Bariatrics staff members include a board-certified nurse practitioner program coordinator, a registered dietitian, LPN, medical assistant, and dedicated operating room and post-operative nursing staff. All procedures are performed in Americus at Phoebe Sumter. Pre-screenings and post-follow ups are offered in both Albany and Americus.
