Phoebe Celebrates National Donate Life Month 2025: Let Life Sing!
Albany, GA | April 9, 2025 – Right now, more than 100,000 people in the United States need an organ transplant. Nearly 3,000 of them are Georgians. National Donate Life Month (NDLM), established by Donate Life America and its partnering organizations in 2003, is observed every April to raise awareness about organ, eye, and tissue donation.
“At Phoebe, we are committed to educating the community about the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation and doing all we can to facilitate donations when patients and their families make that choice. Organ donation saves lives, and I commend all the compassionate members of the Phoebe Family who so delicately help guide families through that process,” said Deb Angerami, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital (PPMH) President.
Last year was an outstanding year for organ donation at PPMH. The staff increased referrals of potential donors to Lifelink of Georgia by 12%. Lifelink of Georgia is the federally-mandated organ procurement organization for this region that hospitals must work with to perform the lifesaving mission of organ donation and transplantation. In 2024, 11 donors from PPMH resulted in a total of 28 organs transplanted. Both numbers were significantly higher than the previous year.
This year’s them for NDLM is “Let Life Sing,” inspired by birds that are seen by many as a symbol of spring, new beginnings, and visits from loved ones who have passed away. Their songs bring
peace and hope, mirroring the lifesaving and healing power of donation.
Phoebe is holding a series of events this week in connection with National Donate Life Month, including a Donate Life Flag-Raising ceremony on its main campus. The flag was raised Wednesday afternoon at 1:08, highlighting the fact that one donor can save up to eight lives. One tissue donor can also benefit up to 75 people.
“The flag-raising ceremony is a time for us to remember and honor donors and their families who chose to save the lives of others. We work closely with those families to provide counseling and spiritual guidance, and we hold Honor Walks so our staff can pay tribute to them and their loved ones. This day is also a time to celebrate the many lives saved every year because of organ donors,” said Rev. Joey Holland, PPMH Manager of Chaplaincy.
Throughout April and beyond, Phoebe encourages everyone to register as an organ, eye, and tissue donor and learn more about living donation.
