Phoebe Offers 100 free Mammograms in Honor of Mother’s Day
Albany, GA | April 9, 2025 – In recognition of Mother’s Day and as part of Phoebe’s commitment to promoting women’s overall health, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital will provide 100 free 3-D mammogram screenings throughout May. These screenings are available for women who are uninsured and in need of their annual mammogram.
The 3-D mammography procedure is similar to a traditional mammogram, but the key difference is that the tomosynthesis machine moves around the breast rather than staying stationary. During the 3-D exam, multiple low-dose images are captured from different angles, offering a more comprehensive view of the breast tissue. This advanced imaging allows radiologists to better detect and evaluate individual breast structures, reducing the risk of missing abnormalities due to overlapping tissue.
“Early detection through regular screenings is vital in the fight against breast cancer. Our advanced 3-D mammography technology provides a clearer and more detailed view of breast tissue, allowing us to identify potential issues with greater accuracy. We are proud to offer these free screenings to ensure that more women, especially those uninsured, have access to this essential health service,” said Dr. Shailaja Sappati, Phoebe Radiology.
To be considered for one of the free breasts tomosynthesis screenings, each applicant must meet the following criteria:
- not had a mammogram in the last 12 months
- age 40 or older
- not experiencing any breast problems, (if you are experiencing breast problems, contact your doctor immediately)
- uninsured
- not pregnant
- live in one of the following counties: Baker, Calhoun, Colquitt, Crisp, Dougherty, Early, Lee, Miller, Mitchell, Randolph, Sumter, Terrell, Tift, Turner and Worth
- must have a referring physician
It is important to note that this event is only for initial mammogram screenings and does not apply to follow-up imaging. Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women, other than skin cancer.
Appointments for the free screenings can be scheduled starting Monday, April 21, 2025, by contacting the Phoebe Patient Contact Center at 229-312-4800.
