Dr. Mortel earned her undergraduate degree in biology at Boston University in Boston, MA, and her medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, West Indies. She completed her residency at the University of Arizona Neurology Residency Program in Tucson, AZ.

Dr. Mortel completed two fellowships: one at John Hopkins School of Medicine Global Health Neurology Fellowship in Lusaka, Zambia and the second at Brown University Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship in Providence, RI.
