Renal (Kidney) Cancer (DRAFT)

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the primary form of kidney cancer, accounting for approximately 9 out of every 10 kidney cancer diagnoses. Individuals with RCC might develop multiple tumors in either one or both kidneys. Often, these tumors can be sizable upon detection. Fortunately, in many instances, kidney cancer is identified before it metastasizes to other parts of the body.

Types of Renal Cancers We Treat:

  • Clear cell: This is the predominant form of RCC, characterized by its pale or clear-looking cancer cells.
  • Papillary: Ranking as the second most frequent RCC type, these tumors exhibit minute, fingerlike projections.
  • Chromophobe: A less common RCC variant, these cancer cells are notably larger than other RCC types.
  • Collecting duct: Another rare RCC type, its cancer cells resemble irregular tubular structures.
  • Unclassified: This category encompasses tumors with cells from multiple cancer types or those that don’t match other established categories.

Treatment

Renal (kidney) cancer is most often treated with surgery, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, or a combination of these treatments. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are occasionally used. People with kidney cancer that has spread, called metastatic cancer (see below), often receive multiple lines of therapies.
